From the Archives - PURE, 2003
Pure is a series of images I took from inside moving cars while they were cleaned by automated car washing units in early 2003. I had just given birth to my son and was looking for a way to keep working that involved less travel than most of my other photographic projects. Finding visually different car washes around Atlanta became a light hearted mini-quest and a break from the early intense days of motherhood, though I took my son with me most of the time.
The symbolic, almost ritualistic cleansing process appealed to me, as well as the idea that these images could never be recreated. Like the proverbial snow flake, no combination of soap and water hitting the windshield could ever be exactly the same twice.
Car washes are squat, ugly buildings, but I was able to find a beauty in their abstraction that reaffirmed the transformational nature of photography for me.
