Just Do It

Though the original purpose of this blog was to contrast images of home with images from the wider world, I find I am tiring of home. Right now I can't see its small pleasures.  That restless urge to travel, to freshen my eyes with new landscapes, to push myself to meet strangers, the dread of doing so, followed by the exhilaration of a successful meeting, are all experiences I need right now - now that school has started for my family and myself as an instructor.

I did give myself an out - the title, All's Fair - I can do whatever I want, though of course I don't have to give myself permission or ask anyone else's. This circular thinking I inflict on myself was the very reason I named the blog All's Fair. Sometimes I spend more time thinking about the limits of my concept that just doing it. Getting trapped in your own head to avoid action must be a common problem.  That's probably why the Nike campaign is so successful. Combine "Just Do It" with Rodney King's plea, "Why can't we all just get along" and that's all the philosophy we need to jump start the world in to a better place.

So for now, I found that my neighbor is an accidental sculptor and that a magic white bug has landed on my back door. Good omens I hope.

Summer's Over

Now I know that summer has officially come to an end.  Last night as I loaded up on supplies at my local Target, I appeared to be the only shopper who wasn't a freshman entering Georgia Tech.  No posters, alarm clocks or big study-in-bed pillows for me this year.

On a side note, much to my 8 year-old's despair, Pokemon, has been pushed off the shelves in favor of an onslaught of Toy Story 3 merchandising. We're boycotting the movie - principles, you know.

Catnip Kitsch

Kitsch is like catnip for me. I'm drawn to this wonderful stuff the way bugs circle lightbulbs on hot summer nights. I know I'll get zapped once I make contact, but it's just so irresistible in a Twinkie kind of way - full of empty calories and a drop in blood sugar, but that first bite, that first rush of processed sugar is so satisfying...if it only lasted. So I might regret this posting - I make no claim to high art - but here are some statues that dotted the grounds of a hotel in Bardstown, Kentucky, that I slept in on Saturday night, while working on a long term project in the state.
